It is an essay written by Osho. In this text Osho seeks purity of discipline with reference to the prevailing practice of it in the world. He condemns the dead and stinking concept of discipline and focuses on the realistic , dynamic and relevant concept of it.
Osho says that discipline has been misinterpreted a lot. It is usually taken as the concept having several do's and don'ts. The word is generally meant by the set of rules. But in his view it is not confined with it and it's something more than that. The time is changing and everything gets changed with it. Hence, the codes and conduct should be reformed with the time. The relevant ones at a time might come untrue in another time. Our life is not static and we have to follow the time. So, the meaning of discipline also gets change with time.
The author gives the root meaning of the word 'discipline'. The word comes from the same root . discipline. The root meanign of the word is ' a process of learning. One who is ready to learn is a disciple and a process of being ready to learn is discipline.
Giving reference of Socrates the author says that beginning of learning is keeping our mind vacant, i.e, to say 'I know only one thing , that I know nothing'. When the mind is empty it triggers the way for exploration. If one is knowledgeous, the knowledge will prevent further learning. For new learnig one has to dropp his all knowledge and become ignorant. When he is in the state of not - knowing (know nothing), he is free to learn and ready to explore. People usually think of thousands of do's and don'ts when they think of discipline. Hence, it hinders in learning and learning doesn't go smoothly. Creativity is inevitable for learning. And to be creative, all the shoulds and should nots should be dissolve.
Osho says that Mihammed has given a discipline to Mohammedans. It might be good for him but it can't be good for anybody else. So did Buddha to Buddhists but it can't be good for anybody else. A discipline is an individual phenomenon. When you borrow it, you will start living with set principle, dead principles. Life is never dead. It's constantly changing. Imagine what happens to your life if you live with dead principles. It will be dead like life and there won't be any progress in life.
Five thousand years ago, Manu gave discipline to the Hindus and they are still following it. Three thousand years ago, Moses gave a discipline to the Jains and they are still following it. They are out of date now. They should have been buried years ago.
The author suggests that we should not be static otherwise we will be dead. we need to try to be alive and live each moment without any reference to the past and without any reference to the future. Live the moment in the context of the moment which will bring totality. Totality is creativity.
