Sir Winston Churchill was the great writer, orator and
statesman. He was the prime minister of England during the worst days of World
War II. He leaded England twice as the prime minister. He was also a great
intellect. He won Nobel Prize in Literature. He was the first person as an
honorary citizen of the United States of America. 'My Early Life' is a book by
Winston Churchill. It is an autobiography of his life. Here, the text deals
with his early life i.e, his childhood days and describes how he became a
successful person in life. It vividly shows the importance of reading books
with reference to Winston Churchill.
Churchill was one of the greater men ever lived in the world.
He led the people of Britain through the darkest period in their history. He
strongly led them against the black-listed man Hitler and the third Reich. Yet,
he was not satisfied as he declared that his education was worthless. He said
his years in school were like being in a cave. He read only few books, but what
made the difference in his life is that he made those great books part of
himself. Churchill is worth reading because of the hunger and the integrity
that he exemplified like many other great leaders, Ghandhi, Lincoln, etc. He
believed that his life was planned by the God and It moved in the course of
destiny.
This text describes how Churchill struggled to fulfill his
wish to get knowledge and power. He had been already famous by the age of 25. He
had seen active service in Cuba. He had played polo in India. He had served in
a couple of small wars on the North West frontiers. He had visited many African
countries. He had defeated enemies in many wars. That paved him way to be
elected as the prime minister in England. All of his childhood experiences are
included in his book my early life. It was published in 1939.
When he was seven, he was sent to a boarding school called
Eton. It was a highly reputed school having strict rules and regulations. He
didn't like it because the head teacher treated the students cruelly. They
would be bitterly punished by him. Later, he joined Brighton School. He studied
there for three years. Here, he was allowed to read on the basis of his
interests. He learnt French, poetry, history, riding, swimming, etc. Later on ,
he was admitted to Harrow. It was a good school with good teachers. Everyone
was happy and satisfied but he was not. In the eyes of Churchill, his school
days were barren and unhappy period of his life.
Churchill joined army in 1896. He had plenty of time when the
parades were over. He became more curious to learn in his free time. The idea
of reading books came in his mind. He read history, literature, philosophy,
economics, etc. He even asked her mother to send him some books to read. It
made her so much happy. He read many important books of the renowned figures
like John Gibbon, Plato, Aristotle, Darwin, etc. After reading so many books,
the horizons of his mind widened. It made him a good critical thinker. He also
read many books on religion. He found all religions having same purpose and
matter despite their various forms, shape and colour. Thus, by reading books in
various types he became successful in his life. How he became successful was
all about reading books of different genres. Hence, reading books is the worthy
means to have success in life.
