The Eye of the Tiger

It is a narrative essay written by Derek Burnett. It deals with the importance of wildlife conservation. The essay tries to convince people for protecting animals presenting a professional hunter Peter Byrne who gave up his job of hunting wild animals to protecting them.
Tigers were often killed by the baiting method i.e, keeping a buffalo tethered to a tree and shooting with a bullet by the poachers. Peter Byrne was a young, strong and determined professional hunter. He had once fought against a wild boar and killed with an axe. Despite his bravery, Byrne had a soft spot in his heart waiting to reveal itself.
One day, Byrne was with his helper Pasang in the jungle to hunt the tiger. They shot and injured the tiger but it escaped from their reach. It was very dangerous to follow it and he decided to follow it in the next morning. The next morning they tracked the tiger. Byrne shot the tiger through the neck. Then, he went near to see if it was killed or not. When he saw the tiger's eyes, he found they were sparkling like the flame. They were shiny and colourful which he had never seen before. He was fascinated with the beauty of the eyes. But soon the eyes began to fade and the beauty hade went off.
The eyes and its change brought a drastic change in Byrne's mind. When he saw the death of the tiger closely, he began to think that he was guilty of it. He realized his misdeed and began to regret. Then he decided to give up his profession. He decided that he would spend his rest of life for the conservation of wild animals. So, he established a small non - profit organization 'International Wildlife Conversation Society'.
He requested Nepal government to restrict hunting and recommended to change hunting centres to conservation and research centre in the 1970's. Now, illegal hunting has been restricted by the government.
